Biomedical science is for those who fail to get into medical school?

If you run a search online for biomedical science, you will encounter many posts from people discussing both biomedical science and medical school.

This is not surprising considering how closely the two are related. What is surprising; however, are the number of posts that place the value of a biomedical science degree ‘second best to medicine’.

Now I am not for one minute suggesting that biomedical science is the same as medicine. However, I am also not suggesting that medicine is any higher, in terms of quality etc, to biomedical science.

As I have mentioned, many people do in fact use biomedical science as a route to graduate entry medical degrees, but the point of this article is to help us see that the biomedical degree in itself is a fantastic degree, offering a fantastic career, although it is not medicine!

If one is interested in studying medicine to become a doctor then that is absolutely fine. But we should see the benefits of a career choice based in the labs.

It is, in fact, within the NHS laboratory that most of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of medicine take place, and a career as a laboratory scientist, directly involved in diagnostics can be extremely rewarding.

If you are highly interested in a career in medicine, but you do not want to become a doctor, then maybe a degree in biomedical science could be the solution you are looking for.

Kind regards,
